Royal Pair
Ife, Nigeria
about 1750
54 cm

Royal Pair:

The clothing and jewellery of this pair differ somewhat from those of the previous pair, and both figures are thinner and wear more individualised facial expressions. In addition, the difference between man and woman is much more explicit in this piece. The male figure is distinguished by his size, his clothing and the charming way he hooks his arm around the other figure's. The woman wears a longer garment than his and holds the ram's horn. The man, for his part, clasps both hands around an unidentifiable implement.

The crowns worn by this circa 250-year-old pair and their highly individualistic expressions bear reference to the sensitive and realistic Ife style, though the rendering of their bodies is more akin to works from Benin.
